“HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT”

A Presentation of Hat Sayings and Their Origins
Penny presents an amusing and informative talk revealing the origins behind the many “hat-isms” found in our language today. Discover how much a “10 gallon” hat actually holds. Why you might be considered “mad as a hatter” or why you might just need to “keep it under your hat”. During the program, volunteers will model both novelty and couture hats depicting the “hat-isms” being discussed. This 30 to 45 minute presentation will surely add to any club or meeting agenda.

“AND THEY’RE OFF”
A Presentation of the History and Traditions of Churchill Downs
How the cherished and honored rituals surrounding the “most exciting two minutes in sports” came to be. Discover how, by accident, design or legend, the beloved customs of Churchill Downs and the “Run for the Roses” came into being. Mint Juleps, the roses, the hats, the song, My Old Kentucky Home, and many more. Accompanying the talk, will be a sampling of the types of hats worn at Churchill Downs, from the height of haute couture to the wacky creations worn on the infamous Infield. This is also a 30 to 45-minute presentation guaranteed to enlighten and entertain.
Try a “Hands On” experience for the program at your next meeting.

“Make It – Take It”
A mini-clinic on how to make your own trims
Penny will demonstrate and instruct you and your fellow “designers” how to fashion embellishments from feathers, laces, and various items to adorn your hats, hair clips or the tiny “fascinator” toppers we see on the peerage in Europe. This 60 minute informative mini-class will not only delight your group, but send them on their way having made a couture creation fashioned by their own hand. (No sewing or craft experience necessary).

“Top” Yourself”

Learn the couture method of “draping” to create elegant cocktail chapeaux to be worn to your next evening engagement. During this two-hour seminar, Penny will guide you step-by-step as you fashion your hat using European-style millinery techniques. When you are finished, you will be off to dazzle the crowds in your own stylish design. (know how to thread a needle and do a simple baste stitch)
