O.K. I wanna spout off about classic rock...I gotta a lot to say here, so if ya don't have the time, don't get even started...First of all, who decides what's classic and what's not?!?!! Just because some song gets on everybody's playlist, Just because untold numbers of people are brainwashed into thinking Stariway To Heaven, Layla, & Free Birds are the greatest all time Rock numbers.....Don't get me wrong, these ARE great tunes, but are they more innovative than Johnny B. Goode, Let It Be, Jumpin' Jack Flash or Purple Haze??? And what about other also-rans like Savoy Brown, Ten Years After, Rory Gallagher, the early incarnations of Fleetwood Mac or the countless other groups that don't fit into someone's idea of what should have been??? And how come ya only hear the same certain few tunes by the artists that DO get played....There's a lotta cool Dylan, numbers besides Like A Rollin' Stone!!! Who decided that Johnny Winter and Elvin Bishop aren't classic enough to be included....Or that Canned Heat only has two songs worth airplay...(Refried Boogie or Amphetamine Annie not being among them!)...And WHY don't I ever hear Rick Derringer or J.J. Cale on the radio anymore???
Ya know everyone says they made better music back then....Well, it certainly was a magical time period, not only in the development of Rock, but also in the development of the music industry. It wasn't as big of a business, and not as many companies risked as much money as is on the table in this day and age. Hence, more chances were taken and more artists were allowed to be heard with a greater freedom of expression and with less of a formulaic approach. Today the MUSIC business is really the music BUSINESS!!!
